Glutamine Supplement: New Therapy For Ulcerative Colitis?

An animal study from Japan has found good news for ulcerative colitis sufferers. There is a possible new supplement, enriched with L-glutamine amino acid available on the market. This glutamine supplement could improve symptoms of colitis.

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic, long lasting disease. It’s an autoimmune disease, one of the forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).  Crohn’s disease is the other form of IBD.

Ulcerative colitis is a very painful condition which results in inflammation and open sores inside the colon. The inflammation harms the lining of the colon, which leads to bleeding, production of pus, constant diarrhea, and pain.

There are currently no cures for ulcerative colitis, so the goal for existing medical therapy is to induce and maintain remission. The symptoms can go for months or even years. When not in remission, treatments focus on reducing the symptoms, and improving quality of life for the patients.

In serious cases, surgical removal of the colon and rectum may be suggested, though this obviously greatly impacts on quality of life. A glutamine supplement was studied, which may help in IBD cases.

E Joo, S Yamane, et al, researchers at the Laboratory of Sports and Exercise Medicine, Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies, Kyoto University, Japan, investigated a new glutamine supplement for treating ulcerated colitis. The supplement contains the amino acid glutamine, fiber, and oligosaccharide.

A glutamine supplement has a variety of biochemical roles in the body, including improving gastrointestinal function. Glutamine supplement may help protect the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, which is damaged by ulcerative colitis.

The researchers tested mice, in which they induced colitis. The mice were given either the glutamine supplement, or a placebo, for ten days. The animals’ body weight loss and the measurable activity of colitis were tested.

The glutamine supplement group had some impressive results. Their body weight loss and disease activity index were significantly lower. Additionally, intestinal inflammation was reduced with the glutamine supplement group.

A study from the University of Tennessee looked into the effects of a leucine/Vitamin B6 supplement on preventing the devastating effects of obesity.

Obesity rates are so high now that the World Health Organization considers it to be an epidemic. It increases the likelihood of developing many serious health problems. So what can we do about it?

Researchers Michael Zemel and Antje Bruckbauer (University of Tennessee) developed a clinical trial to examine various factors including oxidative stress. They hoped to prove the effectiveness of a leucine/Vitamin B6 supplement (NuFit active blend) in improving fat_oxidation. Fat oxidation is best described as burning fat, or energy, in our bodies. And if we don’t burn the fat, but instead store too much fat—if we are obese–we will develop oxidative_stress.

Oxidative stress is thought to be involved in the development many diseases, including cancer, and heart failure. Targeting obesity therefore significantly reduces the risk of developing a wide variety of health problems.

The four week clinical trial involved 20 obese subjects. They were given either the supplement containing the amino acid leucine or a placebo three times every day. The NuFit Leucine supplement was dissolved into black tea to disguise the flavor.

Leucine is widely available, found in foods like soybeans, beef, and peanuts. It’s also a popular food additive, and is classified as a flavor enhancer.

The study had impressive results. The NuFit Leucine supplement increased fat oxidation, and significantly reduce oxidative stress. It also led to a 43% decrease in triglyceride content. This means the supplement tested will be a valuable method of managing and even preventing obesity.

A study to evaluate the effects of pre-meal drinks on blood sugar was developed by Ulrika Gunnerud, Cornelia Heinzle, et al, researchers with the Department of Applied Nutrition and Food Chemistry, at Lund University in Sweden.

They investigated the effect of consuming drinks containing protein and a mixture of five amino acids, before eating. The amino acids studied were isoleucine, leucine, lysine, threonine and valine.

14 healthy, non-smoking volunteers took part in this randomized, single blind trial. Their blood was tested after fasting, and then again after they had eaten. They were given the pre-meal protein, amino acid drink, and then given a ham sandwich. The drink and sandwich were consumed within 12 minutes.

Amino acids and diabetes — blood glucose levels reduced by almost 50%

Researchers found that starting a meal by drinking whey or soy protein with amino acids significantly reduced the post-meal blood sugar—by up to 47%.

The study concluded that using specific proteins and amino acids in pre-meal drinks could be a new strategy to help diabetics reduce high blood sugar.


L-Carnosine Benefits: Can L-carnosine Become the Next Wonder Drug?

Found in abundance in muscles and the brain, the dipeptide L-carnosine is an organic compound comprised of the amino acids histidine and beta-alanine. Because of the various ways L-carnosine can benefit cellular activity, such as slowing down the growth of cataracts and certain tumour cells, researchers at Aston University in Birmingham decided to study the mechanisms behind how L-carnosine works.

In doing so, they believe that it could lead to breakthroughs in L-carnosine helping treat and prevent age-related ailments such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, type 2 diabetes and cancer.

Study for L-carnosine for health benefits, numerous diseases, even anti-aging

Scientists Alan Hipkiss, Stephanie Cartwright, Clare Bromley, Stephane Gross and Roslyn Bill believe that L-carnosine slows down age-related biological disturbances through energy metabolism or proteostasis, which is a type of protein stabilization process. Since L-carnosine also acts as an antioxidant, it has the potential to be used as a drug that can target multiple diseases.

They report that L-carnosine can act as a compound to combine the heavy metal that causes cell damage in the system. In doing so, L-carnosine will effective prevent lipids, proteins and DNA from undergoing age-related damage (antiaging properties).

The researchers recall another recent study that supports the theory that L-carnosine can improve cognition in people living with schizophrenia.

For Alzheimer’s disease, L-carnosine can act as a neuroprotective agent and has been shown to inhibit problems in the mitochondria. The dipeptide can also eliminate mutated polypeptides and stimulate the production of stress proteins that will further work to rebalance the system.

Overall, the researchers are very hopeful that the antioxidant and anti-senescence qualities of L-carnosine can greatly help cell deterioration due to old age. They reviewed studies that show L-carnosine can help slow cells that cause cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and alleviate symptoms of diabetes.

More comprehensive studies will have to be completed but the outlook is promising that L-carnosine can be an effective form of treatment for a variety of health problems.


Glycine Metabolism: Cancer Targeting Treatment?

Are we now able to peek into dangerous areas, like cancer, that would normally kill us? Scientists are having a look at glycine metabolism and its role in cancer growth. Researchers in Boston investigated the mutations cells undergo when healthy cells are mutated into cancer cells, and looked into possible ways of targeting these cancer cells.

Cancer occurs when previously healthy cells mutate, proliferating—replicating–rapidly. In fact, the definition of cancer is a malignant neoplasm, which refers to a group of diseases involving unregulated cell growth. The cancer cells divide and grow uncontrollably, forming malignant tumors which are often fatal. Rapidly proliferating cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body through the bloodstream or lymphatic system.

Very simply put, cancer can spread so rapidly because cancer cells reprogram normal, healthy cells. Mohit Jain, Roland Nilsson, et al, researchers with Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA, wanted to examine this metabolic reprogramming of cancer cells.

They studied 60 well-characterized human cancer cell lines, from nine common tumor types, to characterize cancer cell metabolism. The researchers profiled the cellular consumption and release of over 200 metabolites, the molecules which are necessary for metabolism.

Link between glycine metabolism and cancer cells

In the in vitro experiment, cancer cell lines were cultured, and their metabolites were measured. The researchers found a significant correlation between glycine consumption and cancer cell proliferation.

Glycine is a non-essential amino acid, which can be synthesized by our bodies. In the study, glycine was consumed by rapidly proliferating cells, and released by slowly proliferating cells. This means that glycine is demanded by the cancer cells. The glycine consumption was pronounced in ovarian, colon, and melanoma tumor cells.

The researchers discovered that the glycine biosynthetic pathway was closely linked to cancer cell proliferation, meaning that the cancer was relying on glycine to spread. This increased reliance could make the cancer cells metabolically vulnerable to specific targeting.

The study concluded that this metabolism of glycine could be used to target the rapidly proliferating cancer cells, possibly becoming a new anti-cancer treatment.


Low Phenylalanine Diet and Cancer Patients

Advanced cancer is cancer which has spread, or metastasized, and may no longer be responding to treatment. Some cancers, such as brain cancers, are considered advanced cancer even if they haven’t spread. The cancer is not curable at this stage.

There are some treatment options, however, which focus on controlling the cancer and managing cancer symptoms, so the patient can feel as good as possible for as long as possible. Limiting the spread of cancer is one of the goals, including controlling tumor growth.

Low tyrosine and low phenylalanine diets

Researchers M Harvie, I Campbell, et al, with the University Department of Medical Oncology, South Manchester University Hospitals NHS Trust, Manchester, UK, hoped there would be a correlation between the results of an animal trial and a human trial in regards to low tyrosine and low phenylalanine.

A low tyrosine and low phenylalanine diet was successful in limiting tumor growth in animal models. These are both amino acids. Tyrosine is made in the body from phenylalanine, and is crucial to general metabolism. It has a strong antidepressant effect.

The researchers developed a pilot study to test the low tyrosine and low phenylalanine diet, which was offered to human volunteers with advanced cancer. Three patients with metastatic melanoma and three patients with metastatic breast cancer agreed to try the diet for one month.

Results were disappointing. All patients experienced negative side effects. They reported increased levels of anxiety and depression due to the low tyrosine diet. Some patients also lost weight. There was a slight increase in white cell counts, but not significantly.

The researchers concluded that low tyrosine and low phenylalanine diets are not a viable treatment for people with advanced cancer.
